Oman strips Yemeni dissident of citizenship
Associated Press , 2009-05-22 03:36 PM
The Omani government has stripped the citizenship it granted a Yemeni dissident who fled to the country after sparking a civil war at home in 1994.
The government said Friday that Ali Salem al-Beidh breached the conditions of his citizenship by returning to politics.
Al-Beidh sparked a civil war in Yemen in 1994 when he declared the south independent. The Yemeni government put down the movement, but Al-Beidh, who was Yemen's vice president in 1994, said Thursday that southerners should continue the fight.
Four Yemenis were killed Thursday when police reportedly opened fire during a demonstration of anti-government protesters in the southern port of Aden.
