SANAA (AFP) Three Yemeni policemen and four suspected Al-Qaeda militants were killed while two others were captured in a shootout on Monday in the eastern province of Hadramaut, a local police official said.
The shootout which lasted several hours erupted as police stormed a house in the town of Tarim, 800 kilometres (about 500 miles) east of Sanaa, where suspected militants were hiding, the official told AFP.
"An officer was among the three policemen killed," he said, adding that at least six other policemen were wounded.
A witness said the gunmen hurled a grenade at the advancing security forces, while the militants fled to a neighbouring house, before police overpowered them.
The province of Hadramaut has seen two recent attacks claimed by the Yemen branch of Al-Qaeda, including a suicide car bombing on July 25 in the town of Sayun, which killed one policeman and wounded 17 people.
A Yemeni police patrol came under a grenade attack last week in al-Mukalla, but no casualties were reported. Both attacks were claimed by Al-Qaeda.
